Apple provides default descriptions for all your iTunes U images for improved accessibility. iTunes U saves the descriptions as the image’s alt text.
The default alt text is based on the page name where the image was uploaded. Root page banner image alt text defaults to your iTunes U site name. Course image alt text defaults to the course title. Track image alt text defaults to the track title.
If the default alt text does not apply or is incomplete, you can provide your own alt text. When providing your own alt text, keep the following guidelines in mind:
Provide descriptive yet concise text.
Use the fewest number of words necessary.
For root page banner images, it is a good idea to begin your description with the name of your iTunes U site.
For banner images, text should include the name of the page and, optionally, a brief description of the image if the image contains additional relevant content or text.
For course images, text should present the content and function of the image, not a description of the image. For example, if the image for a search button is a magnifying glass. The image’s alt text should be “search”, not “magnifying glass”.
Include any text displayed in the image itself. For example, if your image contains the text “Continuing Studies”, be sure to use that text in your description.
Do not include the following words in your description: image, artwork, cover art. iTunes U will identify the object as an image.
For details on how to add alt text, see the banner image and course image element descriptions in “Editing Welcome Pages,” “Editing Public Feature Pages,” and “Editing Course Pages.”
